Experiential Learning Series — Together in Care: Embrace Mental Wellness for Our Elders

2024-12-28

JC Scholars participated in an experiential learning programme at the District Elderly Centre of JC JoyAge in Sham Shui Po to explore the issue of elderly mental wellness and bring warmth to the seniors during the festive season.

During the programme briefing, the JC JoyAge team elaborated on the complexities of elderly depression in older adults, highlighting its unpredictable nature and varying daily experiences. Factors such as stress, declining health, loneliness, and bereavement, significantly contribute to the vulnerability of older adults, increasing their risk of depression and other serious health issues. Tips for effectively engaging with older adults were also provided.

After the briefing, the JC Scholars, along with the JC JoyAge Peer Supporters, formed small teams to visit homes of elderly individuals in need. Applying the practical skills learned, they engaged with the elderly, listened to their experiences, and offered encouragement.

Following the home visits, the participants regrouped to share their reflections. The JC Scholars were impressed by the life stories of the elderly individuals and were motivated to provide more compassionate support to this group of population who are often overlooked in the community.

Since 2016, JC JoyAge has developed a collaborative stepped-care service model to align community mental health services and district elderly services, to maintain a community-based support network for older adults at risk of, or living with, depression.

Words from participating JC Scholars

  • This was a wonderful activity for us to understand more about the issues of elderly having mental health challenges in society.
  • I was moved by the passion and willingness to help by the peer supporters.
  • It was a blessing to help others and I felt being helped at the same time. I hope to participate in similar events more often in the future.
